Igor Malijevský

 

 

Born in 1970 in Prague, Czech Republic. He studied mathematics, physics and philosophy at Charles University in Prague, where he graduated in 1995. At the same time he bought his first camera. His favorite subject is the narrow space in between reality and strange, surreal visions. He lives in a simple old stone house 40 km far from capital. He is a member of Unimap.

He started to write in 1995, mostly poems and short stories. He has published book of poems "Bìlomorka" and a book of short stories Družba (Friendship).

Malijevský likes direct contact with the audience. He reads texts in plenty of literary cafés and clubs and often cooperates with musicians. He also created several happenings in public spaces.  His literary evenings are always on the border between theatre play, concert and poetry.

Photography is an integral part of Malijevský's language besides literature.  His photographs are used as illustrations in most of the Czech intellectual, cultural and art magazines and also abroad in Poland, Germany and in the United States. He cooperates with publishing houses as an illustrator.

Since 2001 he has focused on photography intensively. Nowadays it is independent and the most important part of his art activities. He has got the Czech Press Photo award twice.

He has realized numerous individual and group exhibitions in the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany and in the United States.  At the moment his images are represented in private collections, both in the USA and Europe, in the Museet for Fotokunst in Denmark and Museum of Fine Art, Houston. In the United States he is represented by Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery in Dallas, DOMA Gallery, Charlotte and Henry Gregg Gallery, New York.
